Day 29 - Rockford (Illinois)

Another state!! And this time I got a photo of the welcome sign. I also crossed the Mississippi! Which means I’m getting really close to the second part of the trip, the East Coast! But to put everything in order, first I’ll cycle to Chicago tomorrow. Then, I’ll catch a train to Pittsburgh, sort of skipping Indiana and Ohio, to be able to spend more time on the East Coast. 

As I expected, Illinois so far looks and feels very similar to Iowa. The steeper hills surprised me a little, not that I mind them, they are good training for the Appalachian, I’m just trying to amplify some difference between the two states. Perhaps the only other thing I could mention is the bike friendliness in the city of Rockford. Or the lack of it. In Iowa I quickly realized that in a bigger city there are a more or less connected network of bike lanes, or paths. They just felt a tiny bit less car dominant, then other cities I came across (except perhaps California). But Rockford…could probably be said to be the worst of them. On a main road (2x3 lanes), that is ornamented with businesses on both sides and cuts through a large part of the city, I couldn’t even find sidewalk for a while. As much as I like to bike in cities, this one I wouldn’t mind entirely skipping next time. On the other hand, it was mostly cloudy! So when I arrived after 152km I still had a lot more energy then usually. The power of sun! Or to be more precise, the apparent suction of power by the sun is a huge factor during a ride. Oh yes, a few dogs (running freely around a house) were running after me until they hit the property line. Not a step further! So they learnt a lot, but it seems they skipped the”don’t threat/bark/run towards to the cyclist class…

Egy másik állam!!  És ezúttal kaptam egy fotót az üdvözlő tábláról.  Én is átkeltem a Mississippin!  Ami azt jelenti, hogy nagyon közel járok az utazás második részéhez, a keleti parthoz!  De hogy mindent rendbe tegyek, először holnap Chicagóba biciklizek.  Aztán felszállok egy vonatra Pittsburghbe, kihagyva Indianát és Ohiót, hogy több időt tölthessek a keleti parton.

Ahogy vártam, Illinois eddig nagyon hasonlít Iowához.  A meredekebb dombok kicsit megleptek, nem mintha bánnám őket, jó edzés az Appalache-hegység előtt, csak próbálok némi különbséget kiemelni a két állam között.  Talán az egyetlen dolog, amit megemlíthetnék még, az a bringás infrastruktúra majd’ teljes hiánya Rockford városában.  Iowában hamar rájöttem, hogy egy nagyobb városban vannak többé-kevésbé összefüggő kerékpárutak, vagy ösvények.  Mondhatnám, hogy egy kicsit kevésbé éreztem dominánsnak az autókat, mint más városokban, ahol találkoztam (kivéve talán Kaliforniát).  De Rockford… valószínűleg a legrosszabbnak mondható.  A két oldalán üzletekkel díszített, a város nagy részét átszelő főúton (2x3 sávos) egy ideig nem is találtam járdát.  Bármennyire is szeretek városokban biciklizni, ezt nem bánnám, ha legközelebb teljesen kihagynám.  

Viszont nagyrészt felhős volt!  Így amikor 152 km után megérkeztem, még mindig sokkal több energiám volt, mint általában.  A nap ereje!  Pontosabban fogalmazva, a nap látszólagos energiaelszívása óriási tényező egy utazás során.  Ó, igen, néhány kutya (szabadon szaladgáltak egy ház körül) elkezdett futni utánam, amíg el nem érték az ingatlanhatárt.  De aztán megálltak😊Egy lépést sem tovább!  Szóval sokat tanultak, de úgy tűnik, kihagyták a „ne fenyegetőzz/ugass/fuss a kerékpáros után” osztályt…
